Why Transparent Pricing Matters in Therapy (And Why We Do Things Differently at WaitingRoom.ca)
By Michael Kang, RP
Mental health care should be accessible, clear, and fair.
But too often, clients are left feeling confused about therapy pricing — especially when different types of therapists (students, RP(Q)s, RPs, specialists) all seem to charge similar rates.
Over the past few years, we noticed something troubling happening across Ontario:
- Student therapists being billed at nearly licensed therapist rates
- RP(Q)s (Registered Psychotherapists in Qualifying status) charging what fully licensed RPs charge
- Clients paying premium fees without understanding the therapist's level of training
- Early-career therapists feeling pressure to set high rates before they feel ready
We believe this lack of clarity doesn't serve clients or therapists.
And we believe something better is possible.
The Problem: When Pricing Doesn't Match Experience
Many people who decide to start therapy do so after weeks — sometimes months — of stressing, searching, and finally gathering the courage to reach out.
And when they do, they deserve clarity.
But across much of the industry, pricing looks like this:
- An intern: $100–$150 per session
- An RP(Q): $140–$180 per session
- A newly licensed RP: $160–$200 per session
- A specialist or senior therapist: $180–$250+ per session
To the average person, all these titles are confusing.
And many clients don't realize they're paying near-specialist pricing for someone who is still training or just beginning their career.
This isn't the fault of individual therapists — it's a system issue.
And in our experience, it creates two major problems:
1. Clients overpay without understanding who they are seeing.
Many believe all therapists are priced the same or assume higher price = higher quality.
That's not always true.
2. Early-career therapists are pressured to charge high fees before they feel fully confident.
This slows their growth and makes the profession less accessible for new clinicians.
At WaitingRoom.ca, we knew this needed to change.
Our Solution: Pricing That Reflects Experience, Training & Support
We built WaitingRoom.ca with a clear philosophy:
Clients deserve transparency.
Therapists deserve fairness.
Pricing should make sense.
Our fee structure is intentionally designed so each level of training is aligned with an appropriate rate:
- Student therapists (supervised with oversight): lower cost
- RP(Q)s (early career, under supervision): mid-range
- Registered Psychotherapists (RPs): standard fees
- Specialized or highly experienced therapists: higher range
This approach ensures:
- ✔️ Clients always understand who they're seeing
- ✔️ Fees match training and experience
- ✔️ Therapy stays accessible
- ✔️ Student and early-career therapists grow without pressure
- ✔️ Nobody feels misled or overcharged
This is our commitment — not just a marketing angle.
Why Being Transparent Matters to Us
We chose the name "WaitingRoom.ca" because the waiting room is where people begin.
It's symbolic — a place of transition, a place to breathe, a place before the next step.
But many people never make it past the waiting room in real life because of:
- long waitlists
- high costs
- confusing pricing
- uncertainty about what they're paying for
We're here to change that.
Our goal is simple:
Make therapy easier to start, easier to understand, and easier to afford — without sacrificing quality.
The Bigger Picture: A Better Future for Mental Health Care
Transparent pricing isn't just about numbers.
It's about values:
- Honesty
- Accessibility
- Respect
- Equity
- Trust
We want clients to feel informed and empowered.
We want therapists to feel supported and fairly compensated.
And we want mental health care in Ontario to move toward clarity, not confusion.
If this resonates with you — whether you're a client, a therapist, or someone exploring options — we're glad you're here.
You're already one step past the waiting room.
